David A. Walden holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in History and Political Science and a Master of Arts in Canadian Studies from Carleton University, Ottawa.

Mr. Walden recently retired as Secretary-General of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO. He has been a member of many Canadian delegations, including the Diplomatic Conference on the UNESCO Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict (1999), the General Conference of UNESCO (Paris, 1999 - 2011, the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) High Level Meeting on Sustainable Development (Vilnius, 2005), the International Conference on Education (Geneva, 2008) the International Network on Cultural Policy (Ottawa, 2010), and Memory of the World in the Digital Age: Digitization and Preservation (Vancouver 2012).
From 2001 - 2003 and again from 2005 - 2009 he represented Canada on UNESCO’s 58 Member State Executive Board and the Board's Non-Governmental Organizations Committee. Mr. Walden was also a member of the Executive Management Committee of the Canada Council for the Arts from 1999 until his retirement in January 2013.
Mr. Walden now works as a consultant in international organizations and governance. He is a Honourary Lifetime Member of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO.
